HE Luamanuvae Albert Mariner, as current Chair of the Pacific Islands Ambassadors Group (PIAG), led the PIAG delegation to a meeting with China's Special Envoy for Climate Change, HE Liu Zhenmin, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing, on Wednesday, 27th August 2025.
At the meeting, Ambassador Mariner acknowledged China’s global leadership role in addressing the climate crisis through the multilateral COP process. Ambassador Mariner also acknowledged the firm commitment from the Chinese Government in deepening cooperation with Pacific Island countries in combating climate change.
Special Envoy Liu Zhenmin shared with the group some of China's work in climate change including China's expectations for the upcoming COP30 meeting to be held in Brazil in late 2025, leadership in green and clean energy transition, and its proposed Early Warning System (EWS). H.E. Liu Zhenmin also reaffirmed China's commitment in upholding multilateralism and supporting the Paris Agreement, as the legal basis for international cooperation on addressing climate change, and called on all UN member states to honor their commitments and responsibilities under the Paris Agreement. H.E. Liu Zhenmin also reiterated China's firm commitment in assisting developing countries, including the Pacific, in addressing climate change under the framework of South-South Cooperation.
